Today is my 21st birthday!
It’s hard to imagine that I can now legally order a drink and have officially crossed over into the undisputed territory of adulthood. I’m not used to the idea yet, but I’m sure I will be with time.
I thought that since I’m 21 (ah, that’s weird to write!) I’d share some things I’ve learned in my life so far. And, of course, I’m going to share 21 things. It wouldn’t seem right if I didn’t.
So, without further ado…
21 Things I’ve Learned by My 21st Birthday:
- In the end, it’s more important to be true yourself than to change who you are to keep friends around.
- It is okay to wear crazy socks every day, no one really notices and it’s a great conversation starter if they do.
- Don’t be afraid to follow your dreams.
- It’s okay to admit you’re afraid.
- Just go do the things you want to do, don’t worry about what others will think.
- Fuzzy blankets and socks can make any day at least a little better.
- School isn’t only about the grades.
- It’s okay to say “no” to things.
- Family is important and will be there when no one else is.
- It’s okay to eat toast for dinner from time to time.
- It’s okay if you don’t like going out for a crazy night on the town.
- and it’s okay if you do.
- Don’t let anyone force you into doing something you don’t want to.
- It’s important to listen to others if they’re telling you something personal, it means they trust you.
- Even though you’re an adult, it doesn’t mean you have to stop being a kid. Keep swinging on those swings and sliding down those slides.
- It’s okay if you can’t do something you’re “supposed” to be able to yet, everyone grows at different rates.
- It’s important to stay true to your values, because when you don’t it’s one of
the worst feelings in the world. - Apologize when you’ve done something wrong, it will make everyone feel better.
- Talk to someone if they’ve hurt you, even if it scares you to do so.
- Do the things that you are afraid to do, but want to; you never know what might happen.
- It’s okay to not follow the beaten path, and it’s okay if you choose to. It’s up to you, don’t let people tell you which path to take. They aren’t you and only you know what’s truly best for you.
I realized when making this list that a lot of the things I’ve learned have been about facing what scares me. If I could only share one thing I’ve learned so far it would be to not let fear control your life. I’m still working on this (and many of the other things I’ve mentioned) as I’m sure many other people are.
We’ll all be okay, we can do it!
Until next time,
-Acire
And even adults have days when they aren’t ready “to adult today!” Birthday blessings, lovely moons, fairies dancing in the flowers, and a steaming cup of tea – a few of my wishes for you.
