His toes are tapping, wanting to drag him out onto the dance floor. He resists the urge. He has to wait until he finds the right girl. The prettiest one in the room, that is who he’ll twirl to the music with.
He continues to move around the hall, listening to the music that fills the room with the bright sounds of the swing band. He dodges couples as they move rapidly around the floor, not paying attention to anyone but their dancing partner. That’s what he wants. He wants to gaze into the eyes of the woman he’s taking around the floor.
The song ends, and he still hasn’t seen her. He waits awkwardly along with everyone else as they wait for the band to start the next piece (band members are moving around). Finally, when they do it’s a jazzy number. A song that makes him want to dance even more.
Where is she? He grumbles to himself. What is taking her so long? He begins to move around to the back of the room, a slight sway in his step. The music is getting to him.
He passes tables with only a few occupants, almost everyone is on the dance floor having a grand old time. He is weaving between the last few tables when he spots her. Standing in the doorway, looking around for someone, him.
His heart skips a beat. She is the loveliest thing he has ever seen. He thinks so everytime he sees her. He thanks the powers to be every day that he lucky enough to know her. She is wearing a pale blue dress, with little white flowers on it. Her dark blue shoes match her bag. Her eyes shine with life and her hair is pulled elegantly out of her face.
He walks quickly up to her, smiling the whole way. He bows and offers her his hand.
“May I have this dance?”
“Why certainly,” she replies sweetly, placing her hand in his.
He gently guides her out onto the dance floor, passing a table on the way so she can drop off her handbag. The upbeat number is still playing, and they’re quickly dancing and twirling around the dance floor. They smile at each other.
“I’m the luckiest man in the world,” he tells her.
She smiles and replies, “and I’m the luckiest woman.”
The song ends and the crowd claps and cheers. It really had been a wonderful piece. The lead trumpet comes forward and speaks to the crowd.
“Ladies and gentlemen! It is my pleasure to introduce the man and woman of the evening! Celebrating 50 happy years together!” The lead trumpet sweeps his arm to gesture to the man and woman. The crowd erupts in cheers and applause once more.
The man smiles down at his wife. “I love you so much.”
“I love you too.”
He leans down as kisses her; as tenderly and lovingly as if it was their first kiss.
Another surprise ending! I love it!
I’m glad
Surprise ending? Hardly. I rather enjoyed how she telegraphed it; clever construction!
Beautiful ending!!!
Thank you!
