Cities have always fascinated me. The way that they seem to be breathing; filled with life. Cities have a heart beat, the pace at which life happens. The energy and adventures that surround a city have always drawn my attention.
I grew up in what used to be a small town. Over time it has grown and now has roughly 80,000 residents. We lived a few hours from a city and drove there from time to time. I don’t know if it was that city, or ones we visited during my childhood, but for as long as I can remember I have been enamered with them. It has been a dream of mine to one day live in one. Not in a neighboring town, but in the city itself.
There are many reasons why I would love to make one home.
1. small living spaces
I love how you can make so much out of so little. There’s something charming to me about having a small home. Maybe it’s because there is less to maintain or because it feels cozy. I also like containers which abound in a small space. As my family says, “you like to put things in things”.
2. people watching
I love watching people go about their business. I always wonder where they’re going and what it’s like to be them. There’s something intriguing about it. Seeing all different types of people, their shapes, styles and personalities shining through. I guess you could say in a nut shell that I like to observe the world around me. What better place to see the diversity of the world’s people than a city?
3. sense of adventure
Cities, to me, seem to be teeming with adventures. There are so many things to explore. I love the idea of being able to do so without having to travel someplace far a way (though I like those kind of adventures too).
4. public transportation
Public transportation is one of those odd things that I love. Something about it intrigues me. I’m not a huge fan of cars. Yes, I know they can be very helpful, but I have no interest in owning one. I don’t like to deal with the maintenance, the gas, finding parking. I like the puzzle that comes with finding out how to get from point A to point B with public transit (I’m a puzzle person). Also I can always read, people watch, or listen to music while traveling; that’s a lot harder/dangerous in a car.
5. freedom and opportunity
Cities give me a sense of freedom; I can be anyone, do anything. With so many people I feel like it is more likely I’ll find my “people”. There are many opportunities in a city with all the people and establishments. There seem to be, in my opinion, a lot more options than in a smaller town. As someone who has many different interests, this is freeing.
It may be a few years until I’m actually able to move, but I know that at some point my dream will come true.
I’d love to hear your thoughts on cities. Leave them in the comments below. Have a great day !
Erica, we are like two peas in a pod when it coming to loving a city. I hope you get to live in many cities in your life, and don’t forget wonderful Portland, so close to home.
Hi fellow city lover:) I love Portland and I think it’d be really cool to live there.

Cities are fun to visit – but just too busy for me to live in day in and day out. I need more breathing room and down time. I hope to visit you in a city though…
Thanks! Cities can be a little much at times.

I’ve always felt so transparent in cities. However there is a sense of adventure in them. I like the small Metropolitan ones where everything is basically within arms reach. All the points you mention are fascinating and I hope that your dream comes true one day.
Thank you! I understand the transparent feeling. There is something special in small Metropolitan cities, as you said everything is there when you need it. Thanks for reading!
