Reading has also been a passion for me. However, over the course of the school year, I always end up reading less than I’d like. So starting in the spring I’ve been trying to start building my reading habit up again. I thought it might be fun to share what books I read during April, May, and June. I’m not going to share much about the books themselves, as I don’t want to accidentally give things away, but I will share some thoughts about them.
“The Moon is a Harsh Mistress” by R.A. Heinlein
I loved this book. It’s been a while since I’ve read a sci-fi novel and I’m so glad I picked this one to get me back into the genre. This story had me hooked from the very beginning. It seems to have a little bit of everything, including a sentient computer. I also enjoyed the to the point writing style, that at the same time captured my imagination.
“Getting Things Done” by David Allen
If you’ve been reading this blog for a while, you might know that I love to organize things. I picked up this book as a way to get some more ideas on how to be more productive with my time. While I’m good at getting things organized, I struggle at times actually sitting down and getting the tasks I have to do done. I definitely got some good ideas, like the 2-minute rule (if something takes less than 2 minutes just do it now), and hopefully, I’ll be able to implement them.
“Swing Time” by Zodie Smith
This was another great book. It addresses race, socio-economic issues, identity, and friendships. “Swing Time” gave me a lot to think about and it’s one of those stories that will stick with me for a long, long time. I thought it was beautifully written and the style added a lot to the story.
“The Identicals” by Elin Hilderbrand
I picked this book up as a fun summer “beach” read, and that was exactly what it was. It touched on sisterly relationships as well as dealing with past pain. It was a fun book for summer and it kept me engaged throughout.
“The Curated Closet” by Anuschka Rees
I picked this book up in an effort to find my style and create a capsule wardrobe. It’s been on my list of things to do for a while, and so I finally decided to read more about it. This book was straightforward and covered a lot of ideas and things that I wouldn’t even have considered thinking about.
“Year of Yes” by Shonda Rhimes
I listened to this one during a long car ride. I had seen a talk Shonda Rhimes had given about her “Year of Yes” and was intrigued. I enjoyed the book quite a bit and found that it encouraged me to continue to face my fears.
“Stories I Only Tell My Friends” by Rob Lowe
I also listened to this book while on the same trip. I’m a fan of the show “West Wing” and so was curious to learn more about one of the cast members. Before listening to his book, I knew pretty much nothing about Rob Lowe. It was interesting to learn about the actor who played one of my favorite characters on “West Wing”.
Well, there you have it. It always feels great to get back into reading again (maybe this time I can truly make it into a daily habit). Let me know in the comments if you’d like to continue to see these kinds of posts in the summer.
As always, thank you so much for stopping by today.
Until next time,
Acire
Thanks for the super thoughtful reviews! Keep it up!
Thank you!
yes I would certainly like to see posts like this in the future. i too read too much and this is a cool and concise way of sharing your reading list. i tend to wrote really long reviews even for my own journal! i may do it this way in future, you have inspired me. i loved Swing time – she described relationships so well.
Thanks! I’ll make sure to keep doing them. I’ve always found long reviews hard because I would inevitably give an important plot point away.
