The night was cold and dark, but that was how she liked it. The blanket beneath her formed a barrier from the frozen ground. Her hands were wrapped around a mug of tea from which steam drifted. The pads of her fingers were soaking in the warmth emanating from the ceramic. The freezing air worked its way through the knitted fabric of her fingerless gloves. She sat cross-legged on the blanket, eyes wandering over the sky arching above her. Her hair fell down her back in a long wavy sheet. The hat covering her head slouched backward as gravity tried to pull it to the ground. Her scarf was warm and cozy against her neck. Her breath became visible in the cold night, making her appear to be a dragon pondering whether there was anything worth burning down. The mist of her breath and the steam from the tea mixed together as they rose into the crisp air around her. She loved the cold nipping at her nose and cheeks; the feeling of the hot tea warming her body as it moved from mouth to stomach. In the dark, the world surrounding her seemed endless and empty.
Above her, the sky seemed to be teeming with life. The stars glinting and glittering far away gave off an air of having limitless possibilities. Complete calm washed over her, stilling her whirling mind every time she ventured out beneath the stars. The cold biting at her face made her feel alive and vibrant. The stars shining down on her made her feel invincible as if she could do anything she set her mind to.
So large and bright she felt as if she could reach out and touch it, the moon was shining with familiarity. She and the moon were old friends. While the stars seemed fleeting and distant, the moon was close to home and welcoming. To her, the way the moon started from nothing and grew to a stunning sight every month filled her with a sense of purpose. As if the moon was reminding her that while they might change in appearance, the important things in life never truly disappeared. They would always be there by her side, just as the moon stood by the earth. Each time she sat out in the cold beneath the moon and stars, they reminded her of the beauty in the world. And every time she looked upon the heavens she knew she could do anything and that in the end, everything would be alright.
Pretty.
Thank you!
