many stories could be told
of the wonders of life
of honor and treason
of courage and shame
of love and hate
of life and death
but those are dull
told again and again
always the same
always of humans
never of plants
never of rocks or cats
never of birds or frogs
what about them?
what of their woes?
their fears and their joy?
what of their glory and their shame?
their stories would be new
ones we have never heard
lives that are just as fascinating
the story of a pumpkin
would be just as good
it begins with a seed
small and oblong
flat and slick
the perfect shape for skipping rocks
laid on the ground
nestled amongst the dirt and roots
at night no frost arrives
the summer has come
it warms the seed
day and night
the pumpkin grows
ever bigger and full of life
by fall it sits upon the ground
a lightly squished sphere
of the brightest orange
little valleys run from top to bottom
and it leans to one side
green stalks swirl around it
tiny green leaves sprout from the vines
one connects the pumpkin to its brothers
pale yellow splotches speckle the orange
the nights grow colder
the days shrink
children come and chose a friend
to come home and celebrate
the pumpkin is chosen
it is now settled on the porch
by day it sleeps unnoticed
but by night it came to life
its jagged grin flickers with candle light
the frosts begin to come
the pumpkin sags from lack of life
before long it will be taken
to lay with the others
who were chosen for that special night
its life has come to an end
but it is not a sad occasion
the pumpkin harbored many seeds
which will start the cycle over
the life of a pumpkin
may be dull to some
but it holds wisdom for those who listen
don’t fear the cold
live a life with meaning
it does not matter
if you’re slightly odd
it’s what you bring to the table that’s important
many such lessons are lost
when their stories are skipped over
life holds many surprises
if the right stories are told and listened to
a pumpkin may be a simple gourd
but it’s a beauty of the autumn
and provides wisdom
that is only gained from hearing the story
of the life of a pumpkin.
