“I don’t think she’s coming,” he stated glumly, placing his hands upon the table. “I don’t know what I was thinking. Of course she isn’t coming.”
“You don’t know that for sure,” I said, reaching across to squeeze his hand. “It’s only a few minutes past nine, she probably just got caught in traffic. Let’s give her a bit longer.”
“I guess,” was his response. Our waitress came by and asked if we were ready to order.
I looked up at her and explained, “we’re waiting for someone, would it be possible to get something to drink while we wait?”
“Of course, what would you like?”
“I’ll take a coffee with cream please. What about you?” I directed the question at Will.
“I’ll have the same,” he replied.
“Alright,” the waitress said. “I’ll be right back.”
I watched her move away from us, weaving her way through the tables of other diners. “You okay?” I asked Will, turning back to face him.
“I should be the one asking you that.”
“Well I’m nervous, but that’s to be expected. What about you?”
“I’m nervous too.” He gave me a smile, “thanks again for doing this, it means a lot.”
“You’re welcome. I wanted to anyway, so it’s a win-win.” I returned the smile, ignoring the nerves fluttering around in my stomach.
“Very true,” he said, chuckling slightly. “Thank you.” The waitress was back and placed our coffees on the table.
“Any thing else I can get you while you wait? A menu maybe?”
Will and I glanced at each other and shrugged; looking at a menu wouldn’t hurt anything. Besides it was a way to distract from our nerves.
“Sure, thank you,” I said, wrapping my hands around my mug.
“No problem,” and she was gone again.
We sat in silence for a while, both lost in our own thoughts. The door to the restaurant opened sending a light breeze through the nearby area. The cold air caught my attention and I looked over my shoulder to see who had come in.
I saw a woman wearing an unbuttoned coat looking around. I turned back to Will and saw him standing. I stood as well.
“That’s her?” I asked softly.
“Yep, here we go,” was his response.
The woman caught sight of us and said something to the host, nodding in our direction. She walked over to our table.
“Sorry I’m late, the traffic was terrible.”
“No need to worry, we thought it must be something like that,” Will said, catching my gaze the corner of his mouth turned up a bit.
After giving Will a hug the woman turned to me.
“I’m so glad to finally meet you,” I said holding out my hand for her to shake.
She gently smacked it away. “Don’t bother with that, this isn’t a business meeting.”
The next thing I knew I was being hugged by my boyfriend’s mother. Before me Will was smiling and giving me a thumb’s up. I smiled back, I guess I had passed the first round.
