This post’s inspiration is “onions” and was picked by you the lovely readers. Thank you to all of you who participated!
He tightly grips the knife, the onions before him. He’s nervous and excited; his stomach fluttering and he feels his heart hammering in his chest. Glancing at the clock yet again, he sees that the numbers haven’t changed. It’s still 5:43. It won’t be long now.
They’d planned to meet in a few minutes for dinner. He was cooking for her, which he had wanted to do from the moment they’d met on the subway. He wanted to make sure all the ingredients were ready before she showed up, but he was running late. Work had let out later than normal that evening and he’d needed to take a shower as well as get himself and the apartment ready.
As he begins to dice the onions his mind wanders. From the moment he’d seen her on the subway, he’d had a feeling that there was something special between them. He’d plucked up the courage to talk to her (which was unusual), and they’d instantly hit it off, so much so that he’d almost missed his stop. They’d gone to dinner and a movie, and things had gone well. Soon, they started meeting up on their lunch breaks. They talked on the phone for hours at a time, never growing tired.
Tonight is going to be the first night either of them has gone to the other’s home. He glances at the clock again, 5:44, she’ll be here anytime now. Quickening his pace, he finishes dicing the onions just as the buzzer for his apartment goes off. Placing the knife on the counter he rushes over to the intercom.
“Hello?” he says trying to hide the nervousness in his voice.
“Hi,” she sounds happy.
“Come on up!” He buzzes her in and waits by the door. It seems like an eternity before he hears the knock on the door. Taking a deep breath, he runs a hand through his hair one last time and opens the door.
“Hi!” she says beaming. She looks absolutely stunning.
“Hi!” he replies, smiling just as big.
“Come in, come in,” he says. When she does he closes the door and gives her a big hug. “I’m glad you’re here.”
“Me too,” she says, the smile reaches all the way to her eyes. His heart flutters and in that split second he knows without a doubt that this is who he wants to spend his life with.
