The inspiration for this post, as requested by you, the lovely readers, is “legend”. I hope you enjoy!
Long ago, 5,432 years ago to be exact, a seedling fell to earth and nestled into the dirt. Rain fell from the sky, sun warmed the earth and soon the seedling sprouted.
At first, no one noticed the seedling, it was just one among many. It continued to grow in its little corner of the forest. Years passed, the seedling grew into a large tree and the people began to notice it.
There was something special about the tree. It could have been that it had survived the harshest of winters, while other trees of the same age didn’t fair well, but no one knew for sure. Whatever it was, the tree had a presence. A strong will, a grandmother quality.
As time passed the tree continued to grow and so did the people’s population. Before long the people began to use other trees of the forest as timber to build their houses. They never touched the tree.
It became a custom, a tradition, that whenever there was a hard decision to make, a difficult conversation to have or something to celebrate the people would gather around the tree. They would ask the tree for guidance, for wisdom.
Generations came and went. The village was deserted and left to decay. The tree was visited less and less, but it was still known. People became too busy to visit the tree, as it was no longer the center of the community.
Eventually, there came a year when no one came to see the tree. Its massive trunk and protective branches were an impressive sight, yet no one came to witness it.
The tree waited as more time slowly passed. Still, no one came to ask the tree for wisdom. Knowledge of the tree had shifted into the realm of stories. No one alive knew that the tree truly existed.
And now, here we are 5,432 years after that seedling fell into the ground. We have lost a true friend to the mysteries of time. A wise, generous grandmother of the forest lost among the demands of life.
We may have forgotten the location of the Tree of Time, but let us not forget that it gave us a community, a safe place to talk, a place to gain wisdom and a place to connect. Let us not forget what it taught us.
Let us not forget its existence.
For that, above all else, would be a tragedy.
Lovely!
